WHAT IS INFRARED?

Infrared, sometimes called infrared light, is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than those of visible light. It is therefore invisible to the human eye. IR is generally understood to encompass wavelengths from the nominal red edge of the visible spectrum around 700 nanometers, to 1 millimeter.

WHAT IS INFRARED CONNECTION?

Simply said, an infrared connection is communication between an infrared receiver and emitter. The infrared emitter sends pulses of infrared light to the receiver. Infrared light is used because it has less problems with interference than other types of light in the visible spectrum. Usually, there are only two devices in the connection, but the system still needs a computer name and a common protocol.

The computer name is needed in case there are multiple devices in the range of the connection. This way, the right devices can be selected for the connection. The use of the protocol has to be explained with the way the devices recognize the infrared signal. A chip inside the device analyses the infrared pulses that come in to detect any patterns. If a pattern is recognized, the appropriate action is executed. In computing devices, these patterns are binary codes. If the infrared light of the emitter is activated, it is sending a binary 1 and if it is off it is sending a 0. The protocol ensures that both devices use the same frequency and packet length for the codes to avoid miscommunication.

Infrared transmission uses the frequency range from 300GHz to 400THz to carry signals. We use infrared transmission to transfer data between mobile phones and laptops and between a laptop and a wireless mouse or a keyboard.

Infrared connection is used in the following processes: wireless technology which is used in intrusion detectors; home-entertainment control units; robot control systems; medium-range, line-of-sight laser communications; cordless microphones, headsets, modems, and printers and other peripherals. Unlike radio-frequency (RF) wireless links, IR wireless cannot passthrough walls.

It comes from the heat and thermal radiation, and it is not visible to the naked eyes. In infrared transmission, senders can be simple light emitting diodes (LEDs) or laser diodes. Photodiodes act as receivers. Infrared is used in wireless technology devices or systems that convey data through infrared radiation.
