What is ad hoc network?

Connecting two computers does not always require a centrally managed network. Instead, users can set up an ad hoc network between two computers. The two devices communicate through an ethernet cable or wireless cards. However, this connection is only temporary.

A wireless ad hoc network or mobile ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network. The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a pre-existing infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed wireless networks.

How Does an Ad Hoc Network Work?

Let’s say that Adam needs to transfer a file over to his friend, Eve, but doesn’t have access to a safe Wi-Fi connection. He can create an ad hoc network instead.

An ad hoc network is a temporary type of Local area network (LAN) If you set up an ad hoc network permanently, it becomes a LAN.

Multiple devices can use an ad hoc network at the same time, but this might cause a lull in performance. Users can also employ an ad hoc network to access the internet, as long as the hosting device can access the internet. This might be useful if only one small area of a location can access the internet, but multiple people need to get online.

With an ad hoc network, several devices can share the host device’s internet access. Employers typically pay well for jobs that manage this sort of network, especially in fields that demand a lot of travel.

Adam can create an ad hoc network between his and Eve’s laptops wirelessly, as long as it is within 100 meters (about 328 feet). From that point, he can transfer files to Eve’s laptop.

However, since Adam’s computer is the hosting device, the connection between the two devices will end when Adam ends the session, no matter how many devices are connected to the ad hoc network at the time.

Ad Hoc Connection Security

One of the biggest concerns with an ad hoc network is security If cyber-attackers get within signal range, they will generally be able to connect to a wireless ad hoc network and, therefore, to the device.

Furthermore, users cannot disable their SSID broadcast in ad hoc mode, meaning that the network name cannot be hidden if users are in a public place. For this reason, ad hoc networks are not always appropriate.

However, because ad hoc connections are temporary and only accessible within 100 meters, they can be ideal for some situations. Attackers cannot hack into a device from far away and do not have unlimited time to plan their attack

Types of ad hoc wireless networks

Types of WANETs vary by application need and use. Choosing a wireless ad hoc network type depends on the wireless equipment capabilities, physical environment and purpose of the communication.

MANET. A mobile ad hoc network involves mobile devices communicating directly with one another. A MANET is a network of wireless mobile devices without an infrastructure that are self-organizing and self-configuring. A MANET is sometimes referred to as an “on-the-fly” or “spontaneous network.”

IMANETs. Internet-based mobile ad hoc networks support internet protocols, such as TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) and User Datagram Protocol UDP. The iMANET employs a network-layer routing protocol on each connected device to link mobile nodes and set up distributed routes automatically. IMANETs may also be used in the collection of sensor data for data mining for a variety of use cases, such as air pollution monitoring.

SPANs. Smartphone ad hoc networks employ existing hardware, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and software protocols built into a smartphone operating system (OS) to create P2P networks without relying on cellular carrier networks, wireless access points or other traditional network infrastructure equipment. Different from traditional hub-and-spoke networks, such as Wifi Direct SPANs support multi-hop relays. Multi-hop relay is the process of sending traffic from device A to device C using intermediary device B. Therefore, device A and C do not need to have a direct P2P connection established for traffic to reach its destination. And because SPANs are fully dynamic in nature, there is no notion of a group leader in this type of application and, thus, peers can join or leave without harming the network.

Vehicular ad hoc network. This network type involves devices in vehicles that are used for communicating between them and roadside equipment. An example is the in-vehicle safety and security system, OnStar.

wireless mesh networks comprised of radio networks set up in a mesh topology, frequently consist of mesh clients, mesh routers and gateways. In mesh networking, the devices — or nodes — are connected so at least some, if not all, have many paths to other nodes. This creates many routes for information between pairs of users, increasing the resilience of the network if a node or connection fails. Wireless mesh networks are useful in situations where a temporary wireless network is required or in more permanent scenarios where network cabling cannot be run to create an infrastructure-based wireless network.

Other types of ad hoc wireless networks include wireless censor networks ad hoc smart home lighting, ad hoc streetlight networks, ad hoc networks of robots, disaster rescue ad hoc networks and hospital ad hoc networks. Wireless ad hoc networks also have a number of military applications, such as Army tactical MANETs, Air Force UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) ad hoc networks and Navy ad hoc networks.

How to Create an Ad Hoc Connection with Windows

Create an Ad Hoc connection between your iPad and computer by following the appropriate steps below.

Part 1: Windows 7

  1. Open the Start Menu.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click Network and Internet.
  4. Click Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Under Change your networking settings, click Set up a new connection or network.
  6. Select Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network.
  7. Click on Next twice.
  8. Enter the Network name such as “UplinkNetwork”.
  9. Select the Security WAP (or WEP).
  10. Enter the Security Key or password.
  11. Check Save this network check box.
  12. Click Turn on Internet connection sharing.


Part 1: Windows 8, 8.1, or 10

  1. Open the Command Prompt (CMD) as an Administrator Windows 8 & 8.1 – Press the Windows key + X + A Windows 10 – Right click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. To ensure that your network interface supports the Hosted Network feature, type the following command and press Enter: netsh wlan show driver
  3. If “Hosted network supported” shows “Yes”, proceed to step 4. If it says “No”, you can try to update your wireless driver. If the updated driver still does not help, then you will need to upgrade your hardware.
  4. To configure Ad Hoc Wireless connection, type this command in the command prompt and press Enter: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=<your desired network name> key=<your desired password>
  5. To start your new network, type this command and press Enter: netsh wlan start hostednetwork
  6. Navigate to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center. Click on “Change adapter settings
  7. Right-click on Wi-Fi adapter > select Properties
  8. Select the Sharing tab > Check the box to “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” > Click on OK button.
